Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith announced Tuesday that he would be hiring the team’s first head coach in franchise history, replacing Doug Marrone.
Smith, who led the team to the NFC Championship Game in 2014, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Marrone was his choice to lead the Texans.
The Texans hired Marrone in February after spending the previous two years coaching the New York Jets, who had been looking for a coach after Marrone’s contract expired.
Smith said he was looking for the right coach and wanted to be sure he made the right hire for the Texans to be successful.
Smith also said he had interviewed former Jaguars coach Gus Bradley, the team”s former defensive coordinator, and he hoped to interview former Colts coach Chuck Pagano, who was fired last month.
Pagano was hired in August to coach the Indianapolis Colts.
