Freight companies have been given an even more negative press in recent months, thanks to a string of high-profile incidents.
The latest was the death of a freight train driver in the state of Queensland last month.
The driver was hit by a train travelling on a busy road, which then derailed and killed him.
The NSW Premier also blamed the rail network for the high number of freight train accidents, and his own train crash in 2015.
A spokesperson for the NSW Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development told News24 that “the NSW Department has taken a number of steps to address the issues relating to the rail freight industry.”
“These measures include establishing an independent safety and regulatory oversight body, providing a formal regulatory framework for the industry, and undertaking a comprehensive safety review of the rail industry,” they said.
Transport Minister Todd McClay, who is also the minister for rail and rail services, told the ABC that the safety review process would be completed in two to three years.
“We’re also looking at the rail rail industry to see what we can do to support the freight industry,” he said.
